The success of intervention and educational programming for young children with special needs depends on adequate amounts of highly qualified personnel who provide services required under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Professional licensure and state standards are intended to promote consistently high qualifications among individuals who provide services associated with their respective disciplines. Differences exist in how states award licensure and define standards. This database is designed to be a resource providing information about each state’s initial licensure or certification requirements for each professional discipline providing services for young children under IDEA.

The database contains licensure/certification sources and requirements (i.e. examination, education, and experience). Information is provided for each state based on IDEA Program, Services, and specific Job Title.

Informational resources, including web links, are provided as a means of obtaining the most current information about each state’s personnel requirements and standards.

Since states may change personnel requirements, we encourage viewers to verify information with the resources indicated.
